Sea Rim Surf/Kayak Report
Upper Coast, TX

December 23rd, 2006

Report by TJ 'Jolly Roger'

I skipped work today and meet up with Northpaw and Bigfost at Sea Rim. Hit the beach around eight. Clam conditions, but a little cool. Few mullet in the surf, but you had to work for them. The tide was out, and the water was its normal brown. After getting a few rods cast out Bigfost was the first hooked up.

Bigfost with a bull red

Shortly after Bigfost released his I was hooked up. Landed my first bull red of the day from the surf. After letting the bull red go me and Northpaw paddled out aprox 400 yards in the kayaks and dropped anchor.

Not to long after we got out a pod of dolphins was aorking its way through. They got into something good about 100 yards from wherewe were anchored. We were talking about how sometimes dolphins will run the fish off, but not this time. Northpaw's clicker starts to scream, he lays back into the fish and the fight was on. Well at least for a few seconds. The fish came to the kayak fast, and almost just gave up. Big ole black drum.

Northpaw with a Big Ugly

Released the big ugly and made our way back to the anchor balls. The current was strong from the east. Pushing the kayaks a long ways during the fights. No bait around, and nothing hitting dead shrimp. Once back anchored up, it was my turn. Long hard run, peeling drag, not a big ugly. After a good sleigh ride I land a bull red.

The bite was on once we got back to the anchor balls. Not one minute after I get a bait out I was hooked up again. Another bull red, released him and headed back. I got hooked up again in not time, once again a bull red. Get him loose and make our why back. I was getting a little tierd by this point. Not only having to fight mad bull reds, but having to paddle so far after each one caught. Once back after three in a row, I take a Corona break. After getting my second wind, baits back out. Yep, not but just a few minutes later Nortpaw is hooked up. As I go to reel in to chase him, get hit. Woohoo, first double of the day. For one reason or another these two fish swim against the current and keep us close to the anchor balls. Maybe they were feeling sorry for me.

First double of the day, got a smudge on the lens. But you get the ideal.

Get bot bull reds free and get back to fishing. Did not take long and Northpaw was hooked up again. Once again it was a good start, but played out quick. Another big ugly

I am nexted hooked up with a mad fish.

Wind was starting to pick up and it was getting cold. The waves were getting steep and coming into the kayaks with us. It was a little bumpy. But the fish were still around in full force. Lot of pick up and drops today. I think it was black drum grabing the baits, the letting go. We get ready to paddle back and I got hit hard. Screaming run, set the hook and the sleigh ride is on. Northpaw gets hooked up at the same time and we have our second double of the day.

We pick up anchors after releasing the two reds and head for the beach. Bigfost had been cating alot of bull reds from the beach also. Not a few minutes after we get there he is hooked up.

Bigfost hooked up

Great fight from this fish. Bigfost lands him and we notice a very cool spot pattern.

As we all start picking up getting ready to leave. I start to reel in one of my rods that has been out since eight thrity. It was the first rod I casted out this morning. It was almost four when I started to reel it in. To my surprise, something was pulling back. I started laughing and fighting a fish that must have been on the line for hours. It did not put up to much of a fight, and sure enough another big Ugly. But was a great way to end the day. Had a great time fishing with both of you gentleman, and we need to do it again soon
