Plan A: Go out a few miles off Sanibel to find these big reds
Plan B: Ding Darling
The weather was perfect for Plan A, so myself and wadefisher decided
to get out there. We launched on Sanibel a little before 6 AM. We punched
in a number in the gps and started paddling that way.
Once the gps said a half mile to go, we dropped Stretch Manns 25+
plugs. After about 15 minutes of trolling David got a hit and lost it...seconds
later I got a hit and it stuck. I look back at my clicker screaming and a
fish head shaking on top of the water. Puzzled as to what it may be, I fight
it for a few minutes and all of the sudden it stops fighting about 10 feet
from my kayak. I reel it in and this is what came up...
Don't mind the stupid look on my face...I was in shock! :eek3:
The head weighed 10 pounds. My guess is a shark...maybe a cuda, took
a clean bite and left me with the head. :nono:
Any guesses on the original size of the snook? I would guess at least
40" due to the fact that the head itself was 10 lbs.
Bait: Manns Stretch 25
Color: Bright Orange...yellow underbody...with RATTLES
Line: #40 PP #60 Fluoro leader
Speed: 3.8 mph
That gets my blood pumping so I drop the Manns back again and troll
for close to an hour with no luck.
We set out the marker buoy for the structure and anchor up. We sat
there and caught around 20-25 spanish mackeral on spoons from 12"-20".
(Bait for the shark tourney =) )
I cut up a few spanish and we put them out on our shark rigs. David
got a few good runs and the hook just didn't stick.
I got a few Spinners a while later...
Hell of a fight in the kayak with jumps and all...
We were ready to leave and I wanted to soak one more big bait. I cast
it out and wait about 5 minutes. The clicker started going out slowly and
I set into this fish. Immediately I knew it was larger than the 3 foot blacktips
we caught before. I deployed my anchor ball and the fish took me about 300
yards from where I hooked him.
He would just stay near the bottom and bulldog like a jewfish. No headshakes
like a typical shark. After fighting it for 25 minutes he found a piece of
structure to rock up in and broke me off. Jewfish was what we assumed it
to be.
We paddled back in at 11 AM and called it a day.
I had a blast and am looking forward to catching the whole snook next
time..instead of the head. =(
