| Mega FL Kayaking Report Naples, FL
October 9th-10th, 2008
Report by Jeff Shindle |
Was able to get out a couple of mornings to try and find some tarpon
or whatever . Weather is still hot and you can't tell fall is here but the
fishing has been very good and very fall like . Starting to see lots of bait
pods and birds working the beach. Did pretty darn good these last trips .
Lot's of pictures and a couple of fish I have not seen in a while , at least
on my line.
While I was trying to catch some baitfish I get this big slug on #10 test
, 8 foot of squirm shark.
My grouper are finally starting to get bigger. This gag still isn't
legal but close. I also lost a bigger one that would have been about 24"
or so.
Did I say my grouper were getting bigger ? Oh I did ! This was another fish
on #10 test . A juvenile but a biggun . Goliath 37" long and bottomed out
my boga with the tail in the water at 30 pounds . They look cool don't they
??
Finally my bigger rod went off singing , thought it might be a big
blacktip but it turned out to be my first florida kayak kingfish , hell yeah
, not a giant but on mono ,I thought I was too cool . 19 pounds.
Didn't have to wait long after I got baited up. My rod took off again
and I knew right away what this was....
Notice the 4/0 circle in the throat , must have really aggrevated
it cause it jumped a bunch . Hook fell out and swam away after my famous
foot landing.
I put out one last bait and something crashed it on the surface. Kinda
thought it was a shark cause it was brown over white but my mind saw something
else that I dissmissed . However my mind was right , my first kayak cobia
, hell yeah again . I had no gaff and was not about to start snapping pictures
till I had it landed . Put the boga on it and it flipped out , ripped out
of it's mouth and went off running again . My hook was barely in it . When
it came up again I lipped it and stuck another hook in it from my other rod
and paddled to shore . Not a giant but 27 pounds of goodness.
Had no ice and the king was starting to become shark bait so I strapped
on my catch and started back.
Snook were busting good but I couldn't stop had to get some fillet action
going.
Set my camera on my yak and snapped a picture , wish I would have done it
at the surf , oh well.
PART II
My trip yesterday was a good one also . Caught 2 more kings and landed
2 more tarpon . Lost a very nice fish that got chased by a bull shark no
pictures of that unfourtunately. My last tarpon was the smaller of the two
but a respectable fish nonetheless. I met a guy who was yak fishing next
to me and he snapped a couple pictures of me and my fish . I have yet to
meet a jerk in a kayak but there's no shortage of a-holes in boats , why
is that ? Here's a bunch of tarpon pictures from my day . The ones I thought
would be good were blurry or in the sun , some did come out nice and clear
though.
Till the next time...
- Jeff
PS don't be stupid and dangle your legs in the water hanging onto
a tarpon like I have done , I will never do that again.....I think.
