| Hatteras Surf Shark Report Hatteras,
NC
May 13th, 2006
Report by 'Badnews88' |
I packed up the truck and headed to Hatteras with my fiance
Cory friday night. All of the conditions had come around to where they needed
to be and rumors were flying about large Sand Tigers hanging out amongst
the Reds. We hit the beach Saturday morning with friends Phil and Athena
and set up shop. The tide was dropping and our yak expert was not in present
yet, so we sent out some cast baits and started checking the beers for freshness
one by one.
We took turns pulling on the cownose rays and enjoying weather
that was a beautiful as one could hope for. Cory even tried her hand at casting
my heaver and did great I might add. Later on, we were joined by Tuck, Dean,
Ted, Jen, Jim, David, Noah, and some others. Cory stepped up to bat with
the little rod to give the puff daddies a free lesson in humility.
Someone else actually caught this crazy looking spikey puffer.
Later on Lee from the Orange Blossom Cafe showed up with his
Yak-Master Donald ready to get set up for the evening bite. We deployed an
assortment of chopped up fishes from earlier to tempt the beasts of the outer
bar and got comfortable. An hour or so later, and well before dark, something
starts tugging on my TLD. I got excited like usual, but kept it together
long enough to let him eat it and get the hook set, and it was on..
After a 1/2 hour of tug-o-war, I was satisfied that my knots
were good. The swivel on the leader material came out from behind the waves
and Ted went in to do some hand to hand combat with the mystery beast. At
this point we had seen nothing, and I was still worried it might be one of
those "Carhood-Sized Atomic Flounder."
Ted and Phil wrestled the beast up the sand while I caught my breath
and retreived the tape. The Sand Tiger measured 8'9" total length. (NOT fork
length).
We got the pics, worked her back into the briney deep, and watched
her kick off with with enough angst to suggest that she would be just fine
from there. It feels better when they can get going well off their own steam.
I had taken with me Subourbon's Shark Rod which is my cherished
reminder of my late friend, and I had hoped to get my shark on it, but as
circumstance would have it, the Snagglepuss ate the wrong bait. However when
I went to clear it as we were getting ready to leave, I found a cranky little
sandbar on the hook. He wasn't the goal, but it broke the rod in officially.
We packed the truck up early and headed back to the Buxton Beach
Motel to enjoy the last few laps from Darlington and called it a night. All
said and done, it's my biggest biter, and hopefully one of many more to come.
