| PINS Surf Report Padre Island National Seashore, TX
January 21st-22nd, 2009
Report by Catchsharks.com |
Ryan and I met on the north end of PINS late Tuesday night and headed
south. Wednesday morning the conditions were just as predicted
fantastic.
Ryan gets a good start stocking up on fresh baits like these pomps.
I found the whiting were easy to come by on Sabiki rigs and we also
found the occasional slot in the mix.
Ryan released this impressive Black Drum
The bait bite was on and off but plentiful for our deployments.
The big rods were quiet till early afternoon when Ryan gets bowed up.
After a nice battle he lands this Sandbar going over 7
We think that his lucky yellow shirt might have done the trick,
of course it could have been the yellow hook in the fresh pompano :wstl
who knows?
Anyway, this gal was safely tagged and released leaving us to enjoy the great
conditions.
We finish the night out quietly, with a killer steak and potato
dinner. Thursday morning the bait bite is easy enough for deployment. The
fate of this guy was a little different than the larger one.
It didnt take too long and Ryan was bowed up again.
As this one came over the bar and exposed the dorsal, we could tell it was
not another Sandbar
Ryan lands a healthy January Bull.
Things get quiet again for the evening, we enjoy yet another
steak dinner and hang out by the fire. My 6/0hlw slacks up
I reel up
till I find the weight and let it sit for awhile. Shortly after, it slacks
again, I reel it up and I find my first shark of the year. This time we are
certain its the shirt... :rockin
We continue to hang out by the fire, when my 4/0hlw screams into the
night. This reel flat took off. I quickly get on the tower and increasing
the drag just motivates it to accelerate
it slows, I get the turn and
begin to get some line back, but I try to get too much too fast and it turned
and headed off shore again
I increase the drag again with flashes of
Kips Avet experience in my head, this is obviously a good fish easily taking
me way into the PP backing and dangerously down in the spool. It finally
slows and I get the turn when Ryan asks, how ya doing on line?
I say,
if it does that again Im screwed.
I reel down and raise the rod, then reel down and raise the rod.
Its a fight for any line I can get back on the reel with lots of intense
head shake almost the whole time. It turns back at each bar and takes a little
line before it comes over. It fought straight out and straight in remaining
in the spread the whole time, only crossing over/under a couple lines. It
pulled the hook at the 1st sandbar, we never saw it
tough loss.
We go back to the fire and let the adrenaline levels subside before calling
it a night.
Ryans 6/0 gets a run sometime in the night
Then a casted bait again interupts our sleep
Friday morning the string weed had built up in the wade gut bad enough
that we didnt fish much but spent some time shopping on
the way off the sand.
It was a fun trip for a mid-week weather window.
