Report by TJ 'Jolly Roger' |
My father got to the house around six thirty saturday morning
and ended up getting to the sand around seven. Went east of the barricades
a few miles and set up. The wind was chilly out of the north-east. Tide was
way out, and the first bar almost out of the water. Got four rods out and
waited. The duck hunters seemed to be having a good time. The ranch hands
were rounding up a few cows, beside that not much happened until around ten.
Weather started clearing and we get the first run of the day.

Next bite came in pairs. I was fighting a bull red when I took this pic of
my father.
I had time to reel mine in, release it before he even turns his fish. Thought
maybe he had a big one, but just turned out to be very mad.

Tide was rushing in and we were getting hungry. So we started
to pick up around noon. The beach was in good shape, but water hiacynth(sp?)
from the bays had been washing up. Luckly it was not in the surf thick enough
to hurt fishing. Fish were caught on crab, croaker, and whitting from 400
yards to 100 feet from the beach.
01/09/05 Sunday
Met up with Parrothead at the barricades a little after seven.
We made our way down the beach and got set up. Surf was calm and clear. Well,
as clear as High Island gets. About three to four foot visibility. This is
uncommon in the area and hurts the fishing for bull reds. We went the first
few hours with no action. Buckeye showed up around eight and got set up.
Most of the morning was spent BSing with friends and enjoying the great day
on the beach in the middle of winter. Around lunch the tide was coming in
strong, and we had moved the rod holders a few times. Parrothead and I decided
to fish out of the kayaks. We got rigged up and paddled out about a 1/2 mile
and anchored up. The fishing was still slow off the beach.
I was enjoing a good nap when Parrothead yelled at me. My anchor
had came lose and I was drifting away. Pull it up to find out it had broke.
So I got to tie up to Parrothead. We started to see some movement on the
beach and could tell fish were being caught. Around then Parrothead hooks
up with a good fish and gets to go for a sleigh ride.
After getting pulled around for a few minutes he lands a good bull red.
We fish for about another hour with not much to show and called it
a day. Everyone on the beach had caught a couple of fish, most on mine and
Parrotheads rods that we had left out. It was a perfect day on the beach
with light wind, cool temps, good freinds and a few fish.
Here are few pics of the fish caught off the beach.
